How much freezer space will I need?

The number one question we receive from customers considering a bulk beef share is: "Will it actually fit in my freezer?" It is a valid concern. Buying a quarter, half, or whole cow is a significant investment in high-quality, grass-fed protein, and the last thing you want is to be left with boxes of meat and nowhere to put them.
The Golden Rule of Freezer Space
While every animal is different, there is a reliable "rule of thumb" used by farmers and butchers across the country:
1 Cubic Foot per 35-40 Pounds of Meat
This simple calculation allows for the irregular shapes of various cuts—from flat steaks to bulky roasts and brisket.
Freezer Space Requirements by Share Size
To help you plan, we have broken down the typical space requirements for our most popular beef share sizes.
Quarter Cow (~105 lbs)
Space Needed: 4-5 Cubic Feet
Fits In: A small chest freezer or about half of a standard upright freezer. This is the perfect entry point for most households.
Half Cow (~210 lbs)
Space Needed: 8-10 Cubic Feet
Fits In: A medium-sized chest freezer (approx. 10-12 cu. ft.). Ideal for families who cook beef 3-4 times per week.
Whole Cow (~420 lbs)
Space Needed: 16-20 Cubic Feet
Fits In: A large chest freezer or a dedicated full-size upright freezer. Best for large households or split purchases.
Chest Freezer vs. Upright Freezer
The type of freezer you use also impacts how much you can store.
- Chest Freezers: Generally more efficient for bulk meat because you can stack the vacuum-sealed packages tightly with very little wasted air space. However, it can be harder to find specific cuts at the bottom.
- Upright Freezers: Offer better organization with shelving, making it easy to see your inventory. The trade-off is that shelves and door bins create more "dead space," meaning you might need a slightly larger unit than the cubic foot rule suggests.
